LOS SANTOS POLICE DEPARTMENT
RIDE ALONG PROGRAM

I. INTRODUCTION
The Ride-Along Program is a community engagement initiative that allows approved participants to accompany a police officer while on patrol inside an official department vehicle. This program is widely implemented by law enforcement agencies around the world as a way to strengthen transparency and public understanding of police operations.

Participation in the program is subject to minimum age requirements determined by each department, generally ranging between 14 to 18 years old. Participants under the age of 18 may only join the program with verified parental or guardian consent. Individuals with a criminal record are not eligible to participate in the Ride-Along Program under any circumstances.

The primary objective of the program is to introduce participants to law enforcement duties, provide insight into daily police operations, and enhance public understanding of local laws and policing responsibilities.

Participants join the program for various reasons, including career exploration as a future law enforcement officer, academic or educational purposes, and media representatives seeking observational experience for news coverage. Regardless of motivation, departments worldwide welcome participants who comply with all established rules, protocols, and safety procedures.

The Ride-Along Program serves as one of the most effective ways to build mutual understanding between law enforcement and the community. Through direct observation, participants gain valuable firsthand experience regarding an officer’s duties, responsibilities, and decision-making process. The department hopes this program will continue to foster transparency, trust, and positive accountability within the community.

All participants are required to follow the assigned officer’s instructions at all times, including but not limited to the following:
  • Pursuit Situations
    • While inside the patrol cruiser, there is a possibility that a vehicle pursuit or emergency response may occur. In such situations, the assigned officer may immediately suspend or terminate the Ride-Along Program if the circumstances are deemed high risk or unsafe for the participant.
    • If a situation escalates into a high-risk or dangerous incident requiring additional responding units, the Ride-Along participant may be instructed to exit the cruiser. Participants are expected to comply immediately and without argument. The officer will ensure appropriate arrangements are made for the participant’s safety, including transportation to a secure location or relocation to a designated safe area.
    • In the event of a shooting or active firearm-related incident, Ride-Along participants will be required to remain inside the cruiser unless otherwise directed by the officer. Participants must follow all safety instructions provided by the officer at all times.
  • Traffic Stop or Felony Stop
    • During traffic stops or felony stop situations, Ride-Along participants are not permitted to communicate with drivers, passengers, pedestrians, or any individuals approaching or passing near the patrol cruiser without explicit authorization from the assigned officer.
    • If the officer instructs the participant to remain inside the cruiser, the participant must comply immediately and without exception. Participants shall remain seated and wait for further direction.
    • The assigned officer will notify the participant when it is safe to exit the cruiser or resume normal Ride-Along activities.
  • The Ride Inside the Cruiser

    • Ride-Along participants are strictly prohibited from operating or driving the patrol cruiser under any circumstances.
