Vanessa Haisenberg
Sergeant I
What inspired you to pursue a career in law enforcement with the Los Santos Police Department?
What inspired me to pursue a career in law enforcement with the Los Santos Police Department comes from my family background. I was raised in a family where law enforcement was part of everyday life. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the dedication, bravery, and responsibility they carried in their duties. It made me realize that being a law enforcement officer is not just a job, but a calling to serve and protect the community.
That environment helped shape my values, such as discipline, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility. I am inspired to follow in their footsteps, not only to continue the family legacy but also to become a great individual like them someone who can make a positive impact, uphold justice, and be a reliable figure for the community.
What has been your most memorable case or operation since joining the department?
ne situation that really stuck with me happened when I responded to a call about a woman going into labor in the middle of heavy traffic. The roads were completely jammed, and it was clear right away that time was critical.
When I got there, she was already in a lot of pain, and waiting for an ambulance just wasn’t an option. I made the call to transport her myself. I used my patrol unit to push through traffic and coordinated with other units to help clear a path so we could get to the nearest hospital as quickly and safely as possible.
It was a tense moment, and there was definitely pressure, but I focused on staying calm and doing what needed to be done keeping her safe while managing everything happening around us.
We made it to the hospital just in time, and she was able to deliver her baby safely. Being part of that moment is something I won’t forget. It reminded me why I chose this job in the first place to be there for people when they need help the most and to make a real difference when it counts.
How do you maintain professionalism and composure under pressure in the field?
I maintain professionalism and composure under pressure by relying on discipline, self-control, and a strong focus on procedure. In high-stress situations, I remind myself that every action I take must be guided by training and standard operating procedures, not by emotion.
I stay calm by controlling my breathing, thinking rationally, and prioritizing safety for myself, my fellow officers, and the public. I also believe that clear communication and strong teamwork are essential, especially in critical moments where coordination can determine the outcome.
Additionally, experience and continuous training play a major role in building that composure. The more I am exposed to challenging situations or simulations, the more accustomed I become to handling pressure without panic. For me, the key is to stay focused on the mission, maintain a professional attitude, and always act in accordance with my responsibilities as a law enforcement officer.
What are your long-term career goals within the Los Santos Police Department?
My long-term career goals within the Los Santos Police Department are to continuously grow both professionally and personally while making a meaningful impact within the department and the community. I aim to develop my skills through experience, training, and dedication so I can become a highly competent and reliable officer.
As I progress, I aspire to take on greater responsibilities, potentially moving into specialized units or leadership roles where I can contribute more effectively to operations and decision-making. I am particularly interested in roles that require strong judgment, teamwork, and the ability to handle critical situations.
In the long run, I also hope to mentor and guide newer officers, just as I was inspired by those before me. I want to help build a strong, professional, and disciplined environment within the department. Ultimately, my goal is to serve with integrity, uphold the values of the department, and become someone who can be trusted both by my fellow officers and the community.
What does being selected as Officer of the Month mean to you personally and professionally?
Being selected as Officer of the Month would mean a great deal to me, both personally and professionally. On a personal level, it would be a proud moment that reflects the values I was raised with discipline, dedication, and a strong sense of responsibility especially considering my family’s background in law enforcement. It would feel like I am honoring their legacy and becoming the kind of officer I’ve always aspired to be.
Professionally, it would serve as recognition of my commitment to performing my duties with integrity, consistency, and professionalism. It’s not something I would see as an individual achievement alone, but also as a reflection of the teamwork and support from my fellow officers and supervisors.
At the same time, being selected would motivate me to continue improving and setting a higher standard for myself. It would remind me that every action I take has an impact, and I would strive to keep contributing positively to the department and the community we serve.
Who has been your biggest mentor or role model in the department?
My biggest mentor in the department has been Chief Darwin Smith. He has consistently guided me with patience, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility. Through his example, I’ve learned not only technical skills but also the importance of integrity, decision-making under pressure, and teamwork. His leadership has had a significant impact on my growth and the way I carry out my duties.
Which unit or division are you most interested in joining in the future, and why?
I am most interested in continuing my role within the Air Support Division as a Pilot. At this time, I want to fully focus on developing my skills, experience, and professionalism within this division. Being a pilot requires precision, strong coordination, and responsibility, and I am committed to improving in all of those aspects. By staying dedicated to ASD, I believe I can contribute more effectively to the department and perform at a higher level in every operation I’m involved in.
What advice would you give to new recruits who are just starting their career in law enforcement?
My advice to new recruits is to stay disciplined, patient, and always willing to learn. In the beginning, everything can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to focus on understanding the basics and building a strong foundation.
Listen carefully to your seniors and mentors, respect the chain of command, and don’t be afraid to ask questions when you’re unsure. Experience will come with time, so don’t rush the process—focus on doing things correctly rather than quickly.
Most importantly, maintain your integrity and professionalism in every situation. How you carry yourself, both in and out of duty, will define your reputation in the long run.
How do you balance duty, responsibility, and personal life as a police officer?
Balancing duty, responsibility, and personal life as a police officer comes down to discipline, time management, and knowing when to step back and recharge. The job often demands a lot, both physically and mentally, so it’s important to stay fully committed while on duty, but also recognize the need for rest when off duty.
I make it a priority to separate work from personal time as much as possible. When I’m off duty, I focus on resting, spending time on personal interests, and maintaining my well-being so I can return to duty in the best condition.
At the same time, responsibility doesn’t stop completely, so it’s about finding a healthy balance—staying professional and ready when needed, while also taking care of myself to avoid burnout. This balance helps me stay consistent, focused, and effective in carrying out my duties.
What message would you like to share with the citizens of Los Santos regarding public safety and cooperation with law enforcement?
would like to remind the citizens of Los Santos that public safety is a shared responsibility between the community and law enforcement. Our goal is to protect and serve, but we can only do that effectively with your cooperation.
We encourage everyone to follow the law, stay aware of their surroundings, and report any suspicious activity. Small actions, like providing accurate information or complying during a stop, can make a big difference in keeping the city safe.
Trust and communication are key. When we work together with mutual respect and understanding, we can create a safer environment for everyone in Los Santos.
